  • James Elmer Gilkison's death certificate gives 'Ella Allen' as his mother's name, and a letter from Bessie Blythe, dated 13 Jan 1992, refers to Elmer Gilkison as the son of "Willie and Ella Gilkison" (presumably, 'Elmer' and'James Elmer' are the same person; the death date for Elmer indicated in Bessie Blythe's letter matches the death date listed on James Elmer Gilkison's death certificate). However, on the death cert. for Clara May Gilkison(the sister of James), 'Elvira Gill' is indicated as her mother (her father is listed as Wm H Gilkerson).A problem now arises, because James Elmer was born after Clara May, yet Elvira is listed as Clara's mother, AND the mother of all four children on William H Gilkison's 1900 census entry.One possible explanation is that "Ella" is simply a variant or nickname for Elvira; and "Gill" certainly could be a corrupted form of Gilkison (or extremely poor writing on Clara's death certificate). Another is that EllaAllen is the mother of James AND Clara (and the other siblings of James, for that matter), but that she died, and James's father re-married before the 1900 census was taken.^[1611]
